Creating a Fabulous Home Office

I make changes to my home office often, but this set-up, photographed for House Beautiful, was one of my favorite. Except for the office supplies, nothing in my home office was specifically designed for office use. I love the idea of buying furniture that can be used for a variety of purposes. Just like my wardrobe, I invest in a few well-made, unique pieces, then add less expensive accents. I can always find unique ideas and pieces at Scenario Home, so I asked Co-founders Kelly Keenan & Nanette Mortell for tips on creating a fabulous home office. Here is what they had to say.
Your home office space should naturally transition from your living space in order to create a cohesive overall environment. Keeping the underlying design elements in-line with other rooms in your home allows you to layer on office furnishings and eclectic accessories that reflect your style, but aren’t a departure from the rest of your home.
DESKS
The desk you select sets the overall tone of your office. Choose a traditional writing desk for a small intimate space or an iconic parsons-style desk for a more modern room. A reclaimed dining table is perfect in a raw loft space.
SEATING
swap out boring desk chairs for a chic dining chair (you can even add casters). “We love ghost chairs or poufs for guest seating”
STORAGE
The most challenging part of a home office is keeping it presentable at all times. A chic etagere (or a pair of them) provides all of the functionality you need with a design that is suitable for your home. These stately pieces also give the illusion of height to a room.
LIGHTING
Task lighting is important, but we recommend turning up the brightness setting on your laptop and hanging a fabulous chandelier over your desk instead!
ACCESSORIES
Surround yourself with things that inspire you…whether it’s abstract artwork or family photos.
RUGS
Make it comfortable…for instance, layer a plush sheepskin rug under your feet. Your home office should be somewhere you really want to be.
and…..While the days of the two-martini lunch may be over, adding in a bar cart with some fabulous accessories is still oh-so-stylish!
